this is how it is for me how is it for you
leaving a place by walking away
toward an unknown horizon
maybe this is how it’s always been meant to be
why generations
why dissociation
why misunderstanding unfortunately
we have walked away while we still stand side by side
leaving is as important as coming back
and anyone can choose to do either or neither
my imagined freedom is that earnest walk toward an unknown destination
she’s leaving home the song goes
I turned back to it after 45 years
last week it means the same
and so much more
freedom crossing history to pave a new road
thatch away the growth and renew the cobbled street
there won’t be understanding or revelation
the clearing isn’t for enlightened communication across the generations
but for the insightfulness the light’s allowed to penetrate
the barren soil that needs this fresh footfall
we don’t take lessons in hanging on as much as in letting go
for reason
that which the soul ultimately seeks true freedom is in creative autonomy
in development in mutually supportive community
this isn’t found in wide swaths
the handful of ones we can grab ahold of it starts with one
oneself
the next follows
this to me is freedom helping each other remember how to lift the foot the scythe
this the magic of the word the magic of this earth
